Get Your Bike Ready for Summer

Don’t wait until the trails are snow-free and prime to start looking at your mountain bike – now’s the time to get it dialed in for the season.

To get the most out of your bike, there’s a few things you can do at home, and a few you might want to schedule some time with our amazing mechanics for.

First off – check your tires. Do the treads look ok? Are the side knobs undercut? Center treads worn smooth? And if you’re running tubeless (we hope you’re running tubeless) – now’s a great time to open up the bead to see if you still have sealant, or if it’s formed a big snot ball at the bottom of the tire.

If it’s time to replace tires, check out our tire guide here. And if you don’t have the tools to get a tubeless tire off or back on the rim to check sealant, swing by Start Haus.

Quality suspension makes or breaks a good mountain bike – and too many of us neglect these high-tech pieces of our bikes, resulting in degraded performance and diminished lifespans. Fortunately, the Start Haus is fully set up to do a variety of service and rebuilds on a wide range of forks and rear shocks. Click here to find out more.

Got a screw loose? Now’s a good time to check all the bolts on your bike to make sure they’re tightened to proper torque specifications. Drivetrain check: Nothing’s worse than dropping a chain or skipping gears when you’re redlined on a climb. Brakes howling or not quite stopping? Brake pads and hydraulics should be looked at this time of year too.

All three of these things, and a lot more, are covered in a Start Haus deluxe tune, and now is prime time to book an appointment so your bike runs smooth all summer long. And if you’re ready to take the next steps in doing some maintenance at home, Start Haus has a full selection of tools and the experts to get you started.

Start Haus Skunk Werks: Custom Builds

Here at Start Haus, we like building bikes.  So much so in fact, we’ve starting building up Tahoe dream bikes just for you.  Starting with a stock Giant bike, such as the Trance Advanced 2, we add and mod how we like to ride em.

First off, why keep all that extra weight on your crank?  With our custom built bikes, we like to git rid of the front derailleur and shifter hardware, swap out the cassette in conjunction with upgraded Shimano X1 components, add a RaceFace narrow wide chainring, thereby making an 11 by 1 drivetrain. But why stop there?!  We swap out the stock fork for one of our all time favorites, the Rock Shox Pike.  In either a 150mm or 160mm, the Pike is one killer fork.  Excellent damping, perfect travel, and amazing durability.

Beyond that, we might swap a stem, or throw on an upgraded wheelset like Stan’s TR Flow’s.  All this makes what we think is the perfect Tahoe trail bike.  Swing by and check it out!

Why Buy From Us: A Guide

There are many retailers out there, and we fully expect any potential customer to do their homework.  But its not just about the price, but everything else that comes with making a purchase.  We want every customer, new and old, to walk out the door with the same great feeling that drew us into this industry to begin with.  We don’t want the customer to be simply satisfied, we want then to be elated.  And we wont settle for anything less than that perfect experience.

So why should you buy gear from us?

The Staff:  Everyone one at Start Haus lives what they sell.  We all ride, ski, paddleboard, and live to do it.  We work where we play, and that’s no accident.  That passion blends right into the sales floor.  The experience we each have while enjoying the sports we love in the place we love keeps us on our A-game, not because we need to, but because we can’t help it!  This passion inevitably helps you, our customer, to make the right choice- not because we have a quota to meet, but because we know and love the gear we sell.

The Deal:  Beyond knowing you made the right purchase, a deal is icing on the cake!  Any bike purchased from Start Haus comes with a lifetime of adjustments.  That derailleur not shifting quite right?  We’ll adjust it for free.  Brakes not giving you quite the sensitivity you expect?  We’ll adjust it for free.  We’ll only ask you to pay when parts need to be replaced, or you are ready for the next upgrade.

On the day you buy the bike, we want you to be ready to ride, and that means 10% OFF any bike accessory on that same day.

The Service:  We don’t just service Giant Bikes, we’ll service anything you got!  The burner bike getting a little too gunked up?  We’ll fix it.  Your competition level DH bike need some love?  We’ll fix it.  We stand behind our industry certified mechanics, and wont gouge you just because we staff the best guys.  We want to be reasonable, just like you’d expect.  (Check out our full service menu here.)

We dare you to come by and experience what Start Haus has to offer.  You wont regret it!

A Review of the 2015 Giant Stance

For the 2015 season, Giant introduced a new bike to the trail mountain category.  The Stance differs from the Giant Trance on a couple different levels: first and foremost, the Stance has a different suspension platform called Flexpoint.  Flexpoint is a single pivot derivative that relies on the seat-stays flexing a bit to allow for the 4.7 inches of travel that the Stance offers.  The Flexpoint suspension platform on the Stance is both inexpensive for Giant to manufacture and doesn’t require Giant to pony up for any expensive patents.  The Trance trail bike differs in that it features Giant’s renowned Maestro suspension, which is a floating pivot point design, and costs quite a bit more to both manufacture and to sell than Flexpoint.

The Stance is offered in three models, the Stance 0, Stance 1, and Stance 2.  As with all Giant products, the higher the number the less expensive the bike. The Stance 2 comes in at an incredibly low $1470, the Stance 1 at $1905, and the Stance 0 at $2650.  At Start Haus we carry both the Stance 2 and Stance 1 models.

The Stance 1 features a solid Shimano Deore drivetrain with a Shimano XT rear derailleur.  The suspension is by RockShox and features a Recon Gold RL Solo Air with remote lockout and a Monarch R shock in the rear.  The Stance 2 at the starter price point has Shimano Alivio shifters a Shimano Altus front derailleur, Deore rear derailleur and Shimano M355 hydraulic disc brakes.  The suspension is a RockShox 30 Gold fork and RockShox Monarch R.

Sales for the Stance have been very successful. It’s obvious that there is a substantial market for price-point full suspension bikes that have great components.  And it rides great! If you’re thinking about your first full suspension bike or searching a trail bike on a budget you’ll want to check out the Giant Stance.  With almost 5 inches of travel the Stance can handle just about any terrain the mountain can throw at you.  For the price, the Stance will likely blow your mind on the way up and the way down.

Check out the bike here.

2015 Giant Stance 27.5 2: $1470. A great bike that wont break the bank.
